Event description

Water, water everywhere. but not a drop to drink.

Yes, that’s the case for our next field event, Sunday 7th July, at Willunga Basin Water, corner of Victor Harbor and Quarry Roads where we will be planting adjacent to the recycled water storage dam.

And because of the water water everywhere we are requesting that this time, and this time only, children under the age of 10 do not attend. And planting in one area will be out of bounds for children under the age of 16 but there will be plenty to do further away from the water. So, parents and carers - and that’s all of us - be extra water vigilant.

Some of you may remember that we planted at this site before but part of where we planted disappeared, not under water but under asphalt, part of the duplicated Victor Harbor Road. And did you know that the asphalt incorporated recycled wine bottles, we drive on the legacy of our nights before. 459 wine bottles are in every tonne of recycled asphalt in the base layer and 115 in every tonne of the top layer, the glass supplied by a local recycling business. Well, I’ll be (contributing to future asphalt production).

Speaking of the duplicated road, there was no duplicity on behalf of the Department of Transport which readily agreed to fund us to replace the lost plants on another part of the site, just closer to the water. All it took was for Geoff and me to head to the big smoke and go up high in a high-rise building, the highest I’ve been for years. The builders of duplicated roads were very accommodating in their high-rise accommodation and readily accommodated our appeal for alimony to start afresh. And in the end, we didn’t divorce, but agreed to forge a new path together adjacent to a new road with another two lanes added to this long-term relationship. And the story continues.

Geoff and I recently met again with Transport, this time about getting rid of the feral olives along the road which are interfering with our harmonious relationship, and that will happen too. What a wonderful relationship, all based around cars getting here and there.

Speaking of cars, parking will be tight on a tight site, tedious actually, so please take care. Enter off Quarry Road, round about 200 metres east of the new roundabout.

And at the end of our planting efforts there will be water water everywhere but some of that water will have been transformed into other drinkable products, the ones we normally consume. And some of which may have been produced from water from the very water storage we will be planting around. And the glass from the empty bottles may then become another road to somewhere.

As usual, please let us know you are coming along, it really helps source the sauce, sausages,

sauerkraut, sourdough, sauvignon and southwark (or something similar).

Recycled water, recycled glass. The circularity of life.

Cheers to that, Gavin

(Geoff has a well-deserved month off. He’s been on the water somewhere warm)
