Learn the art of upholstery in a hands-on, beginner-friendly workshop.

Got a tired chair or stool that needs a new lease on life? Bring it along and build a cushioned topper! You can even bring in your choice of fabric if you have some at home.

This fun and practical 4-hour course will introduce you to the basic tools, materials, and techniques of upholstery. With expert guidance in a supportive, hands-on workshop environment, you’ll walk away with new skills, practical knowledge, and the confidence to tackle your own small projects.

Whether you want to start small or work your way up to restoring furniture, this is the perfect entry point.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Make and take home a finished chair/stool topper

  • Understand how to select appropriate fabrics

  • Measure and cut upholstery foam

  • Use basic upholstery tools and materials

  • Choose suitable timber for a project base

Course Content

The workshop combines essential theory with practical, hands-on application:

1. Introduction

  • Workshop housekeeping safety briefing

  • Overview of attendee’s projects

2. Tools & Techniques

  • Introduction to basic upholstery tools

  • Using reclaimed and sustainable materials

  • Foam cutting and attachment to a plywood base

  • Applying Dacron and fabric for comfort and finish

  • Securing the base (plug) fabric for a professional look

Participants will gain confidence through guided practice, with plenty of support and tips to help them tackle future projects independently.

  • 18+

  • Absolute beginners

  • DIY enthusiasts

  • Anyone interested in furniture repair, reuse, or upcycling

  • No prior woodworking or upholstery experience is required.

What to Bring

  • Encouraged to bring a chair topper or work on one of our pieces.

  • PPE: Use our face mask, safety goggles, earmuffs. Alternatively bring your own.

  • Snacks/coffee (or purchase from nearby cafes)

  • Wear old clothes, closed-in shoes, and tie back long hair

  • Avoid jewellery and loose accessories

Some of our instructors are experienced in working with individuals living with disability. Please advise us of any accessibility needs prior to enrolment so we can accommodate your requirements.

Tools & Materials

All major tools and materials are provided by The Bower. You’ll gain hands-on experience using both hand and power tools in a safe and supportive environment.

Entrance to workshop
Workshop entrance is via Turner Street at the rear of 107 Redfern St. If the doorway is locked and/or unattended pls ring the doorbell on the left of the roller door.

Transportation and parking
Bower Woodworks is located within 5-minute walking distance of Redfern Train Station. Both metred and unmetered parking are available nearby.
