Description

Discover how to bend genres to create prize winning crime fiction.

This full-day workshop is an introduction to crime fiction through writing and speaking exercises. Learn to master and experiment with tropes across multiple genres. Participants will engage with group work to develop themes and create an outline for a crime novel. They will also use pictures and drawing to inspire original ideas and tension-ridden plots.

When in doubt, start with a body!

Learning Outcomes

As part of this workshop, you will:

  • Bend genres such as historical, romance, erotica, Indigenous stories, personal narratives, etc. to write your first crime novel.

  • Be inspired to work with a writers group to support new writing.

  • Understand plotting and chapter breaks to create tension in a pulsing dramatic novel.

  • Explore tropes and challenge the rules of crime writing.

Format

This is an in-person workshop with a focus on writing craft; it will be held at Queensland Writers Centre. This workshop is designed for beginner and emerging writers of crime fiction, but is suitable for crime writers of all levels and backgrounds.
