Double Featch: Paths of the Storytellers
Event description
This Double Featch steps away from the dominant languages of cinema and into the voices that colonisation tried to silence. Ofelas (The Pathfinder) (1987) and Ten Canoes (2006) are cinematic oaths—spoken in Sámi and Yolŋu Matha—offering stories grounded in place, time, and community. These films don't just portray Indigenous cultures—they speak from within them. Through myth, memory, and land-based storytelling, they revive what was nearly lost and remind us that language is not just communication, but culture, identity, and continuity.
Both films draw deeply from oral traditions—tales of ancestors, spirits, journeys, and oaths passed down through generations. In Ofelas, we encounter the first Sámi-language feature film, a retelling of an ancient legend filled with snow-bound survival and spiritual guidance. In Ten Canoes, we’re immersed in the dreaming stories of Arnhem Land, told within a story-within-a-story structure that reflects how knowledge is handed down: in layers, through kinship, in time.
These aren’t just films—they’re vessels for some of the earliest preserved stories we have on film from these regions. This is cinema that listens first, and speaks only once it has earned the right to. Join us for a night of mythology, memory, and meaning—where film becomes a keeper of culture, and storytelling is an act of survival.
