Event description

The Talk

Since its premiere in 1733, this clever comic opera has captivated audiences with its delightful charm and infectious melodies. At the heart of the story is Serpina, a savvy and resourceful maid who ingeniously outwits her boss, Umberto, determined to rise from her humble position to become the mistress of the house. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Naples, the opera is spiced with lively Neapolitan flavors, enhancing its humour and appeal. Her clever manipulation of circumstances serves as a reminder of the often-unseen power dynamics at play within society, all framed within a light-hearted narrative that does not shy away from addressing poignant themes.

The Speaker

Dr. Hannah Mondry is an esteemed musicologist, pianist, and operatic soprano whose research offers a refreshing lens on the intersection of music and human cognition. With a profound commitment to understanding the mechanisms behind our emotional responses to music, she delves deep into the complexities of auditory experience. Dr. Mondry earned her Ph.D. in musicology from the prestigious Hebrew University in Jerusalem, where she also completed her master’s degree and a double degree in music and piano performance at the renowned Rubin Academy. By investigating how individuals perceive and respond to music, she seeks to uncover the principles that govern our emotional reactions. In her work, Dr. Mondry synthesises insights from cognitive science with traditional music analysis, aesthetics, and historical perspectives, creating a rich tapestry of inquiry that is both rigorous and accessible.

The Sydney Opera Society

For the past four decades, the Sydney Opera Society (SOS) has dedicated itself to fostering a deep understanding and appreciation of opera across generations.

By organising a wide array of talks, concerts, and discussions, the Society aims to engage both seasoned opera enthusiasts and newcomers alike. Each event is carefully curated to provide a unique and captivating experience, allowing attendees to explore the rich tapestry of operatic tradition.

Through these initiatives, the Society not only celebrates the art form but also ensures that the love of opera is passed down, creating a vibrant community that cherishes this timeless performance art.

Opera enthusiasts and new comers join our monthly lectures to learn about classical and contemporary operas, music and pre-introduction to upcoming opera performances.
