*****What is Dancing Freedom?*****
Dancing freedom is a free form dance practice, a moving meditation with the intention of aligning life with love and awareness. A dance practice that blends the medicine of dance with the medicine of ceremony and co-creation. Dancing freedom takes you on a guided dance journey through an elemental wave of Earth, Water, Fire, Air & Ether - deepening your connection to the elements, life and living.
In the dance you are invited to explore an authentic way of moving - a creative expression of your unique being. There is only one rule in Dancing Freedom - you can't do it wrong! In the process of dance we can become a free flow of energy, moving into oneness, beyond the mind, personality and ego.
Dancing Freedom provides an opportunity to release physical tension and pain, to unwind energy which may be held in the body, to express emotions and sounds, to play like a child, to connect with yourself and others in the dance, to have FUN and to remember that you LOVE to dance! 💃
.
“In many shamanic societies, if you came to a medicine person complaining of being disheartened, dispirited, or depressed, they would ask one of four questions: "When did you stop dancing? When did you stop singing? When did you stop being enchanted by stories? When did you stop being comforted by the sweet territory of silence?” Gabrielle Roth - Founder of 5 Rhythms Dance
*****Nature Connection/Earthing/Grounding *****
The surface of this Earth is negatively charged due to a virtually limitless supple of electrons and when humans are in contact with the ground (barefoot, walking on the grass or sand, getting our hands into the dirt, wearing natural fibers and lying on the earth or rocks) we receive an influx of free electrons that generate healing effects.
It is becoming more and more evident that Earthing, also known as grounding, has significant health benefits such as reducing pain & inflammation, affecting our nervous systems by moving us from the sympathetic (stressed) state to the parasympathetic (relaxed and calm) state, better sleep, and more energy. The connection with the Earth is primordial, and could be a primary factor regulating our endocrine and nervous systems.
Unlike our ancestors, we do not walk barefoot very much. We don’t sleep on the ground. Today, we wear synthetic soled shoes that insulate us from the earth’s electric energy. We no longer live and work on the ground, our homes and workplaces are elevated off the ground. We are disconnected! An intention for this retreat is to deepen our connection to the Body and the Spirit through interconnection with Earth, the Fire, the Water, the Air and Ether (Oneness).
*****About Sara-Jane*****
Sara-Jane Cleland is a Dancing Freedom Facilitator, Naturopath, Herbalist, Nutritionist & Massage Therapist specializing in Cranio-sacral/Somatic Healing work who has made her home on Gundungurra land in the Southern Highlands since 2008. Her journey as a holistic practitioner began over 25 years ago as a Yoga teacher and organically evolved into Bodywork, Naturopathy and Conscious Dance.
In 2016, she discovered 5 rhythms dance on retreat with Gina Chick which inspired a journey to the Byron Bay for intensive training in Dancing Freedom in 2018. Since 2019, she has offered monthly Dancing Freedom full moon events and in 2020 she created the Women's Embodied Dance Journey which she runs each school term.
Sara-Jane has been a regular educator at Wise Women's Gathering since the inaugural gathering in 2016 and co-facilitated annual Nurture & Nourish Women's Retreats from 2017 until 2022. She also co-facilitates Mother & Daughter retreats in the Kangaroo Valley.
Sara-Jane regularly supports Caitlin Wood (Dancing Freedom & Open Floor) and Michelle Mahrer (5 Rhythms) on conscious dance retreats, space-holding, offering yoga and creating sacred altars. She is often a guest teacher for conscious dance classes in Sydney and collaborates with Libby Lee, Rebecca Riddington and Diana Belot to offer regular Heart Medicine events - Cacao ceremony, Dancing Freedom and Somatic Breathwork in Manly, Sydney.
The passion that inspires her work is connection. Connection to the healing power of nature through food as medicine and herbal medicine. Connection to the innate healing power of the body through Bodywork and Conscious Dance. Connection to community coming together for dance retreats, full moon events and women's work. And most importantly, providing an opportunity for connection to oneself through self-love and creative expression.
