Eden Armstrong Trio Plays the Music of Cedar Walton
Event description
On the 24th July at JMI Live, the Eden Armstrong Trio pays homage to the music, life and legacy of Cedar Walton (1934–2013); a legendary pianist, composer, and bandleader whose influence on modern jazz remains profound. The trio has curated a mix of well-known gems and deep cuts from Cedar Walton’s expansive catalog, that has become a part of their repertoire over their 5 year tenure together.
Known for his work with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers as well as his solo recordings, Walton fused bebop fluency with lyrical elegance and harmonic depth. Walton's approach is marked by his distinctive touch, strong melodic sensibility, and the ability to bridge hard bop with modern harmonic frameworks. As both a sideman and leader, he elevated any ensemble with tasteful comping, enriching solos, and compositions, as well as arrangements, that have become part of the modern jazz canon.
This tribute brings together three musicians who share a deep love and admiration for Walton’s work each bringing their own voice while channeling the spirit of his music. It will surely be an unmissable swinging night.
