Curious what it’s like to live light on the edge? (Yes, you read that right.) Then it’s time to step into the wonder—no, the thrill—of edge lighting.

Edge lighting breaks all the rules of traditional portraiture. Forget your beauty lights, your butterfly setups, your fill lights, your so-called “perfect” lighting ratios. This isn’t about playing it safe. It’s about lighting with attitude.

The most striking, soul-stirring images? They live right on the edge. You’ll learn how to sculpt light without aiming it directly at your subject. You’ll fall in love with shadow—the parts you were told to avoid when you first picked up a camera. Welcome to the dark side of illumination, where the magic happens on a feather-thin line of light.

We’ll show you how to create powerful, evocative portraits using only the spill and slant of your lighting gear. You’ll work across two killer setups: a moody, “loved-up” couple for those cinematic, low-key vibes, and a character model to help you shape fine art portraits dripping in drama.

All you need? A camera and a portrait lens (something like a 70–200mm f/2.8 or similar, f/4 minimum). That’s it.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

• Your interchangeable lens camera (DSLR or Mirrorless).

• Lens in the 70-200mm focal length range (or equivalent if you are using an APS-C sensor or Micro Four Thirds camera). Your lens needs to be able to open up to an aperture of f/4 or wider at a minimum.

• Memory card and fully charged camera battery.
