About This Workshop

This workshop will teach attendees how to identify the elements of a home's electrical system, including breaker panel and different types of electrical wiring in a typical Cincinnati home. After watching a demonstration of an outlet replacement and learning about the fundamentals of a few basic, common electrical circuits found in a home, attendees will get hands on practice safely replacing switches and outlets while adhering to best practices and the national electric code.

Lead Poisoning Hazard Disclaimer: All home renovation work can create a significant lead hazard if completed in a pre-1978 home. DIYD will provide Lead Poisoning Prevention resources to any workshop attendee living in a pre-1978 home. DIYD also hosts a lead safety class twice a year - we highly recommend that you sign up for the lead safety class before you complete these projects in your home if your home was built before 1978 and you have young children living in your home.

About the Instructor

Hello my name is Beth Smallwood; I am an apprentice in the I.B.E.W electrical union. I have always enjoyed working with my hands and electrical equipment. I have had several other jobs in the construction industry and maintenance positions.I have a small hobby farm east of Cincinnati. I enjoy creating devices or systems to improve my life and make things more efficient. My goal is to build my own house and implement several permaculture projects to help me become more self sufficient on my property. I look forward to helping you understand some basic aspects of your electrical system, so in the future you feel more confident and comfortable with your knowledge and skills.

FAQs

  • What is the class size of a DIYD workshop?

    Typically 5-12 participants per workshop.

  • Can I bring my child with me to the workshop?

Unless we are explicitly offering childcare, we ask that you do not bring children under the age of 16 to DIYD workshops as our venues are not child-safe and there is no place for children to wait during a workshop. Young adults over the age of 16 are welcome to participate in the workshops.

  • What should I wear to the workshop?

We strongly recommend that participants wear close-toed comfortable shoes and durable clothing that you don’t mind getting dirty or dusty. If you have long hair, it is recommended that you bring a hair tie to put it up during the hands-on portion of our workshops. If you have your own PPE (safety glasses, earplugs, mask), we recommend bringing that as well. We will provide PPE as well.

  • Do I need to bring my own tools?

Unless otherwise noted, we will provide tools for all participants in every workshop. If you would like to bring your own tools to a workshop to get practice with them, you are welcome to. Just remember to charge your batteries ahead of time!
