WORKSHOP | Electromagnetic Fields Forever
Event description
Workshop: Electromagnetic Fields Forever
Build an electromagnetic microphone with Urban Ecologies Artist-in-Residence, Vijay Thillaimuthu
This full-day workshop offers a hands-on exploration of the art and science of sonifying electromagnetic fields.
Surrounding us and spilling out of our planet at light speed, the unseen world of electromagnetic fields is increasingly populated as electronic devices are rapidly implemented in pursuit of technological and economic progress.
Participants will build their own electromagnetic microphones in UniSC’s Maker Space, Queensland’s first MIT-accredited Fab Lab. Components will be laser cut onsite, and each participant will be guided through the process of assembling a fully functional device.
This workshop invites participants to listen to and creatively engage with this unseen energy, reflecting on technology’s impact on our environment beyond what we can normally perceive. Harnessing this phenomenon for creative research and outcomes will be part of the workshop context.
No prior experience is required, just a willingness to experiment. Visual artists with an interest in sound and field recording are especially encouraged to participate.
