    Event description

We respect and acknowledge the Gundungurra and Dharawal people, the Traditional Custodians, Elders past and present, and extend that respect to other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

The Emerging Artist Concert Series is delighted to welcome back Beatrice Colombis, who featured in the second concert of our first series in 2022. Dedication and passion create inspiring musical performances; Beatrice has both in abundance!  This concert pays homage to her family's Italian heritage; her father, Mauro Colombis, will join her. The program includes a work by Giulia Recli (1884 – 1970), the first Italian woman whose orchestral performances were given access to the world's major musical Institutions, such as the Teatro alla Scala and the Augusteo in Italy, the Metropolitan Opera in America, and the Royal Albert Hall in London. This will be Beatrice's final appearance in the series, as participation as a featured artist is limited to two cycles. Program details are below.

Beatrice Colombis, 20, is studying the violin at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music under Professor Goetz Richter. Beatrice has won many of Australia's major violin competitions, including the Kendall National Violin Competition 2023, the Sydney Conservatorium 2022 String Concerto Competition, the Richard Mills 2021 Melbourne Bach Competition and the Musica Viva's Inaugural Strike A Chord 2022 national chamber music competition with the Cousin Quartet. She was also a finalist in the 2022 Great Romantics Competition.

Beatrice has a great love of chamber music. Last year, she toured NSW with the Winther Quartet with Kristian Winthe. She was awarded the Henderson Travelling Scholarship with her conservatorium string quartet Asta, travelling in July to study in Finland, Austria and Germany with the "Quatuor Danel", Johannes Meissl and Gregor Sigl. Her current quartet at the Conservatorium has been awarded the Travelling Scholarship, and this year, they will attend masterclasses in Germany and Italy.

Beatrice is an Emerging Artist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra (2023 and 2024) and has toured casually with the orchestra. She has also played casually with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and led various programs on numerous occasions with the Western Sydney Philharmonic, Sydney Conservatorium Orchestra, and Ensemble Apex. She is delighted to present this program with her father, Maruro.

Mauro Colombis is a versatile, classically trained pianist who specialises in composing and performing piano music for silent films. He is also a dedicated piano teacher with twenty years of experience. Mauro believes that it's a privilege to interact with other humans through music, regardless of their age or their level. He hopes that anyone with a musical heart and mindset will contribute to making a better world. Born in Italy and based in Sydney, Mauro obtained his piano performance degrees at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and the Benedetto Marcello Venice Conservatory. As a classical pianist, he gave concerts as a soloist and together with other musicians. When Mauro discovered the hidden world of silent films, he became passionate about music for moving images and developed his style, combining composition and improvisation. Today, he performs mainly as a silent film pianist.
