"The Employment Journey" - An Employability Workshop Series for Transgender and Gender Diverse Jobseekers

This workshop is workshop #3 in a series of three workshops.

This workshop series is designed to set a solid foundation for you across 3 sessions - from job search to interview prep to staying in the job, giving you the tools you need not just to land a job, but to stay employed and reach your goals.

This is a series of three workshops. Participants should plan to attend all three sessions.

Session 3: Staying in the Job

Wednesday 28 October, 1:00pm to 3:00pm

Many people find getting a job easier than staying in one, particularly after time away from work or without prior experience navigating a new workplace. This session looks at the common challenges of starting a new role, including things like lack of trans-awareness, the uncomfortable bathroom situation, and how to prepare for them, even when you shouldn’t have to.

These issues are not ours, but they exist. Let’s talk about not allowing them to get in your way, so you can stay in work long term. That’s for the small stuff though. We will also chat about what is not ok and understanding that it’s sometimes ok to walk away. Every employment opportunity is a stepping stone to the right job for you.

Who is it for:

  • Transgender, gender diverse, and non-binary folks age 18+

  • You're currently looking for paid work, or want to build the skills and confidence to find and keep work

About the facilitator:

Santiago Ruiz (he/they) is a trans man and workplace inclusion specialist passionate about helping transgender people access paid employment, build financial independence, and reach their goals. With over a decade in corporate finance, including more than 10 years directly involved in hiring decisions, followed by three years working in inclusive employment services helping LGBTQIA+ jobseekers with barriers to employment find and keep paid work, Santi brings a rare, first hand view from both sides of the employment equation: someone who has hired, and someone who has helped people get hired. He is now Operations Manager at LF Facility Group, a heart led inclusive facilities company creating job opportunities for people from the LGBTQIA+ community and Allies with barriers to employment.

As Santi puts it:

"We know barriers to employment for Trans people is very real. I'm not here to pretend there are no hurdles, I'm here to say let's jump them together. With your resilience and the support we get from our community, we will break down these hurdles by becoming the people who work, manage, and hire."
