Event description
Canberra Glassworks invites you to the Opening of Robert Fielding's latest exhibition, Nyaru
4pm Gallery Floor Talk with Robert Fielding, Mimili Maku Arts Special Project Manager, Angus Webb, and exhibition curator, Erin Vink.
5pm Official opening by Bruce Johnson McLean, member of the Wierdi people of the Birri Gubba Nation of Wribpid in central Queensland
Robert Fielding is a contemporary artist of Pakistani, Afghan, Western Arrernte and Yankunytjatjara descent, who lives in Mimili Community in the remote Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands. Fielding combines strong cultural roots with contemporary views on the tensions between community life and global concerns. Following a Glassworks supported residency in 2023, Robert's exhibition of work challenges the perception of Central Desert artwork in the medium of glass.
"He is the first artist from Mimili to create work in glass. Co-curated by Erin Vink, curator, First Nations art at AGNSW, and Aimee Frodsham, artistic director, Canberra Glassworks, the exhibition will be a result of his artist-in-residence 2023. Fielding has spent his time at Glassworks experimenting and learning the tricks of the trade with a variety of glass production techniques. He has worked with other molten materials before, such as bronze casting, but this will be his first significant body of work with glass." excerpt from ArtsEdit #39
