This year’s M16 Artspace studio artists exhibition, titled 𝘚𝘏𝘖𝘞 𝘖𝘍𝘍𝘚, challenges the conventional notion that displaying one's abilities is boastful, instead emphasizing the importance of sharing authentic ideas and the creative process behind them. Through this exhibition, you are invited to witness the artists' labor, gain insight into their artistic journeys, and experience the power of art as a visual language.

𝙎𝙩𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚

𝖢𝖺𝗇𝖻𝖾𝗋𝗋𝖺 𝖠𝗋𝗍 𝖶𝗈𝗋𝗄𝗌𝗁𝗈𝗉

The term ‘still life’ typically conjures imagery of fruits, wine, cut flowers, household objects of practical and decorative use. These subjects are likely placed upon a table with a simple backdrop - perhaps some tasteful fabrics are present as well.
Canberra Art Workshop would like to extend the conception of ‘still life’, defining it as ‘anything you want it to be’. This exhibition is an exercise of interpretation - a bending of tropes and a movement beyond them.

𝗚𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝟯

𝙊𝙪𝙩 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙒𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙤𝙬

𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗢𝗻 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼

Since 1996, Hands On Studio has provided a safe environment for artists with a disability to create and develop friendships. Their collective is guided by the principle that art is fundamental to human expression and that all people are entitled to its tools of communication.

This year each artist has created a personal diorama which reflects upon their life, doing so using a wide range of thought processes and materials. They encouraged one another throughout and provoked symbiotic ideas, working independently but with a collective and collaborative outcome.

𝗖𝗵𝘂𝘁𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲

𝘼𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙨𝙚𝙚𝙙𝙨 (𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙨)

𝖠𝗅𝗂 𝖠𝖾𝖽𝗒

𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘥𝘴 (𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘴) speaks to the cycles of growth and decay, love and loss - the life/death/life cycle we perpetually experience as humans. Aedy is interested in the juncture wherein materials create meaning. These husks explore polarities between fragments and the whole, between disconnection and connection, and the dance between self and other.

Exhibitions run from
7 JULY to 30 JULY

M16 Artspace operates on the lands of the Ngunnawal and Ngambri people. We honour and pay our respects to their traditional custodians. We acknowledge this land ‘always was and always will be’ the country of Australia’s First Nations People. Sovereignty was never ceded.
