About the Class:

Explore a variety of hand sewing techniques: Sashiko-Japanese Embroidery, Doodle Stitching, and Visible Mending in this 3-week class. Each week a new skill with templates provided to experiment and play with traditional crafts with a modern take. Apply these methods to your own art and practice, and mend your beloved textiles. We will look at examples and talk of historical styles. All levels welcome, no experience required. Each session students will leave with a sample or mended items of their choice.

Students are encouraged to bring items they would like to embellish and mend, cloth items like clothing, bags, pillows, blankets, etc. 

All supplies will be provided, tho students are encouraged to bring items specific to things they need to mend like matching thread, patching fabric, zippers, buttons, etc.

 Supplies for sashiko, mending and embroidery will be provided, with additional supplies available for purchase at the workshop like extra speciality thread etc.

Supplies that we will use include:

- Sashiko needles

- cotton thread

- linen cloth

- scrap fabric

- colorful embroidery floss

- scissors

About the Artist: River Takada

River Takada is a Japanese American artist focusing on the use of reclaimed materials and functional arts. River makes and sell art like kinetic mobiles, soft sculpture pillows, and annual celestial calendars. Rivtak handmade was established in 2007 and River has been teaching hand craft skills for over 12 years.
