FAQs
- How will Fill Up Your Cup help young adults?
We know that young adults are at an increased risk of social isolation and loneliness, which can lead to episodic or persistent mental health concerns. We want to organise something that is simple and accessible for young adults that really just resembles hanging out with mates and facilitates a social connection.
- What does the evidence say about youth loneliness and isolation?
1 in 3 adults in Australia are lonely, with 15–24-year-olds feeling lonelier than any other age group (43%). According to Loneliness Awareness Week Australia, connecting with friends and family more than once a month may reduce feelings of loneliness and decrease the risk of persistent loneliness. Those with a higher level of community trust, neighbourhood cohesion and community participation are less likely to experience episodic or persistent loneliness.
- Why are headspace running this group?
Because of the evidence that suggests young people are at risk of loneliness and social isolation. Additionally, headspace encourage 7 tips for a healthy headspace, so we want to practice what we preach and put something on for the community that helps people get into life and connect with others.
- What will we be doing at the group?
We have table reserved at High Tide where we do anything from craft, board games, puzzles, quizzes – whatever you make it really! There won't be any awkward ice-breakers round a circle, or telling everyone a fun fact about yourself.
- Why is the group at 1pm on Tuesday?
headspace operate between business hours during the week. We chose 1pm because the lunch rush at cafes are generally finishing so it’s a little quieter, but not so late that the cafes are closing. We know lots of people between 18-25 are studying or working, but we also know many young people feel cut off and isolated who aren't engaged with any work or study.
- Is the group just for people who are lonely?
No, this group is for anyone aged 18-25 and you don’t need to identify as feeling lonely or isolated. You might have plenty of friends already but just looking to expand your circle or meet new people. You might be questioning if your current friends are right for you. You might have just finished high-school and feel a little disconnected. Maybe you are feeling lonely or a bit cut-off and are ready to get yourself out there more. Whatever the reason, you don't need to justify it to us!
- I thought headspace are a mental health service. Is this going to be group therapy?
This is a social connection group not group therapy, nor is this a counselling space. This group is designed to help you meet new people, get out of the house and into the community.
Of course, being headspace, we are here to help if you are looking to connect with a therapist or talk to someone about your mental health. Our Youth & Community Engagement Officer will be there every fortnight alongside some of our Youth Reference Group so we can help anyone who wants to enquire about accessing headspace services.
- Do I have to sign-up?
Ideally, we would like you to sign-up ahead of time so that we can let the café know how many people we expect to be coming through. Signing-up also means that if we need to cancel a meet-up or change the location, we can contact you easily to let you know!
Technically, you can just drop in!
- What will headspace do with my information?
We keep your details confidential and only use your mobile number to remind you the Friday before that a meet-up is coming, and to tell you if a meet-up has been cancelled, moved, postponed etc.
- Is the coffee free?
At your first meet-up, the coffee is on us! If you bring a friend along to a future meet-up, we’ll shout you another coffee for spreading the word! Generally the coffee isn’t free, however it isn't technically an essential part of showing up and participating - it's just nice to hold something when meeting new people or in a new situation.
- Is this group accessible for people with a disability?
Yes, High Tide is wheelchair friendly
