Film Screening: Blue Island
Event description
What does Hong Kong mean to you?」
Nowhere Bookstore will be screening Blue Island, a film directed by Chan Tze-woon. Blending fiction and documentary, the film weaves together key historical moments (the Cultural Revolution, the 1967 Riots, and the 1989 Tiananmen Movement) while recording the stories of protesters who took part in Hong Kong’s 2019 movement. It asks a question that resonates across generations: What does Hong Kong mean to each of us? And what compels people to take part in resistance?
History is not linear. Perhaps we once believed the world would get better — but what if it doesn’t? When resistance fails and movements fade, how do we confront defeat and despair? How do we keep going? The film captures this state of uncertainty. It offers no answers, but perhaps opens a space for reflection.

Nowhere Bookstore will launch a series of film screenings exploring the theme “Islands.” Islands and oceans are not only the geographical context we inhabit, but also metaphors and ways of thinking — fluid, decentered perspectives through which we can reimagine the world we live in. Blue Island is the first film in this series.
