Financial Counselling for Survivors in Prison

This training provides Redress Support Workers with a deeper understanding of the financial challenges and hardships that people in custody may experience, and how they can provide support within their role. It will explore the financial protections available to survivors, as well as the limitations, risks and practical considerations that may arise in a prison setting.

Hosted by Knowmore’s Financial Counselling team, the session will support Redress Support Workers to:

• Recognise when a survivor’s circumstances may indicate a need for financial counselling and understand when and how to refer survivors to Knowmore for specialist support.

• Understand how people in prison may be able to access existing bank accounts, open new accounts and protect their finances while in prison.

• Understand the protections that exist for NRS payments

• Recognise the limitations and risks clients in prison should consider when they receive a Redress payment (e.g. Centrelink, Powers of Attorney or Trustees, housing, debts, financial abuse, scams)

• By the end of the training, Redress Support Workers will be better equipped to recognise when clients in custody may need financial counselling, provide clear and appropriate information within the scope of their role, and connect clients with financial counselling and other relevant supports.

Pre-registration is required to attend this session. This webinar will be recorded and available for workers who register but may not be able to attend due to working part-time or other commitments.
