Forza - The Sydney Youth Orchestra 2027
Description
The Sydney Youth Orchestra presents Forza
Two hundred years ago, Beethoven redefined what an orchestra could do, pushing past politeness into raw feeling and sheer force. In this program, we follow that spirit forward with four pieces that wrestle with this legacy.
Chin's Subito con Forza takes its title straight from Beethoven's own scores, an instruction as much as an inheritance. Higdon's blue cathedral carries a different piece of his legacy: a composer working through grief and finding transcendence in sound, much as Beethoven did as his hearing failed him. Clyne's Masquerade looks back to the public concert culture Beethoven helped build, the promenades and popular performances that first opened orchestral music to everyone, not just the aristocracy. Finally, Adams' Harmonielehre, written in dialogue with Schoenberg's theory of harmony, picks up a thread Beethoven pulled hardest: the idea that the rules of music are there to be tested.
