Building on Intro to Peer Work, Foundations is designed to help new and aspiring peer workers gain skills necessary to be effective.
This training course will run over two days, 9.30am till 4.30pm.
Summary
The Foundations of Peer Work introduces participants to the guiding principles of Peer Work, communication and rapport building, as well as integrating elements of purposeful disclosure alongside aspects of personal story telling and stages of change.
The course also introduces participants to some practical skills around working in multidisciplinary settings and advocating for personal wellbeing and self-care in the Peer Worker role. The course has been developed with input from people with lived experience and peer workers, alongside input and feedback from the LEx Training Hub Course Advisory Group.
Who can benefit from the Introduction to Peer Work course?
- Aspiring Peer Workers: People interested in becoming peer workers, who want to gain foundational knowledge and skills.
- Current Peer Workers: Those already working in the field who seek to refresh their skills or gain a new perspective on their practice.
What you will learn
By the end of the Foundations of Peer Work course participants can expect to have gained further knowledge and skills to:
- Understand the guiding principles of the lived experience workforce.
- Utilise the purposeful disclose AIRTIME framework and the art of rapport and deep listening in a peer work setting.
- Understand the Stages of Change model and learn how to recognise where peers are in their recovering journey.
- Understand how to apply a trauma informed approach to create safer, more supportive environments for individuals with a lived experience of trauma.
- Work in a multi-disciplinary team as a peer worker.
- Learn how to prioritize self-care and supervision.
- Acquire strategies to advocate for their own wellbeing and navigate workplace challenges.
