From Estuary to Freshwater with Monica Peters
Event description
We’ll meet in the carpark next to the sports fields.
Explore this fascinating ecosystem tucked between the sports park and golf course with writer, ecologist and artist Monica Peters. We’ll be diving into our nature journals, capturing the macro and the micro as we investigate this historically significant and ecologically magical wetland complex that transitions from salty estuary to sweet water stream.
Participants will be guided through drawing exercises designed to capture grand vistas, sensory experiences and intricate details found in this intriguing wetland complex. The workshop will include a mindful aural inventory, inviting participants to tune out human-made noise and attune to the subtle sounds of wildlife and wind. Inspired by wetlands as “New Zealand’s shy places,” we’ll reflect on the patience and presence needed to appreciate these cryptic, vital ecosystems and their rarely seen inhabitants.
In addition to creative play, you’ll also learn…
- About the intriguing plants and animals adapted to live in soggy places
- How attitudes to wetlands have pivoted from “dismal swamps” to “nature’s kidneys”
- What’s being done on Waiheke to protect our wetlands
What to bring

- Drawing and/or writing materials
- Warm rain/windproof clothing - we will be outdoors for the duration of the workshop
- Something to sit on damp ground with e.g., a small outdoor cushion or piece of plastic
- Snacks and drinks
