Fundamentals of Welding Engineering Course
This five-day course provides engineers and technicians with an overview of the various aspects of welding technology. The course is organized into modules discussing welding processes, welding metallurgy and weldability, welding design and testing (including mechanical testing and NDT), and qualifications and procedure review.
Designed specifically for technicians and engineering professionals, this course is led by EWI's expert, engaging instructors, who bring real-world industry experience directly into the classroom and lab.
The course price is $4,175 per person. A discount is available to groups of 4 or more team members.
The course schedule is:
8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. with one hour for lunch (on your own) Monday through Thursday
8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. on Friday
For safety reasons, please wear long pants and no open-toe shoes in the labs.

Refund Policy:
Participant may cancel their registration until five (5) business days before the course is scheduled to begin for a refund of the registration fee less a 25% enrollment charge. Cancellation notices received by EWI after that date are not eligible for refund.
Alternatively, participant may transfer their registration to a different course one (1) time. Notice must be received by EWI no later than five (5) business days before the original course is scheduled to begin if Participant chooses to exercise this option.
EWI reserves the right to cancel a course until ten (10) business days before the course is scheduled to begin. In the event EWI exercises its right to cancel a course, participants registered for that course will receive a full refund of the registration fee.
Description
EWI offers “Fundamentals of Welding Engineering,” a one-week course, structured around qualifying a welding procedure to meet the requirements of both ASME Section IX and AWS D1.1-Structural Welding Code - Steel.
Sessions cover welding processes, including resistance and solid-state, laser, and most arc welding processes; welding design and mechanical testing; welding metallurgy and weldability; and nondestructive evaluation.
Each of these topics meets code requirements. The last day involves completing procedure qualification records (PQR), welding procedure specifications (WPS), and welder qualification test records to meet the requirements of both codes. In addition to class lectures, the course includes hands-on arc welding of test plates and inspection of welds and demonstrations of other welding processes.

- What is the course price?
The price is $4, 175 per person. If there are four or more team members from your company, we can offer a 10% discount. Please email akupferman@ewi.org for more information.
- Do I need to bring my own welding gear?
No. EWI provides the welding gear. We ask what size welding jacket you require, when registering for the course.
- Is the Fundamentals of Welding Engineering Course all five days or can I plan to leave early on the last day of class?
The course schedule is 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of the class.
The Friday (final day) of the course is 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. and includes a pizza lunch with the instructors.
The majority of attendees depart immediately after class.
- Does EWI provide meals during the five days of the course?
No. Attendees are responsible for breakfast and lunch on their own each day, with the exception of the pizza lunch provided on the Friday (last day) of the course.
EWI provides coffee and sodas only.
A number of shopping plazas with restaurants are within walking and driving distance of the EWI facility in Columbus, Ohio with a variety of cuisine options at reasonable prices.
- Do I need to make my own hotel reservations and flight arrangements?
Yes. Attendees are responsible for making their own flight and hotel arrangements.
