Gather Together

Join Artist in Residence Lara Tilbrook and Leah Manama Avene of Co Culture for a workshop of conversation and collective making, in response to Lara’s exhibition at ATW, Gami Mawarnarra. 

Gami Mawarnarra brings together adornments and objects from Lara’s homeland on Karta Pintingga (Kangaroo Island), exploring healing, generational inheritance and care for Country. 

Lara and Leah will guide the workshop as a collaborative and communal space to learn, bond and develop processes for decompressing from and dismantling colonial trauma, while nurturing internal and collective strength. We will sit together and share stories while working collectively to thread gum nuts from Eucalyptus remota onto hand-dyed yarns, generating a communal adornment that honours the Mother Trees of Lara’s home.  

No previous making experience is needed. Come to spend time together, learn and make. Seasonal snacks and tea will be provided. 

This workshop is run in partnership with Co Culture, Just Futures Collab and Radiant Pavilion. 

The workshop will be followed by a celebration of Tilbrook’s exhibition from 4pm-6pm

Materials: All materials will be provided by Lara, including gum nuts from Eucalyptus remota and hand-dyed yarn. 

Skill level/recommended age: No experience required, children welcome 

Lara Tilbrook is a visual artist living and working on the Kaurna, Ngarrindjeri and Narungga lands of her ancestors. Working across textiles, sculpture, text and installation, her practice is grounded in ecological care and a reverent relationship to Karta Pintingga (Kangaroo Island). Recent exhibitions include Radical Textiles at the Art Gallery of South Australia and Harbingers: Care or Catastrophe, commissioned by Country Arts SA.
