Event description

This workshop will cover the history of referencing, including why and in what situations we reference, discuss types of referencing and when they are used, provide clarification on APA 7th compared to APA 6th, and conclude with techniques and tips to effectively use and manage references. Activities will be incorporated throughout.  

Dr. Averil Grieve

Senior Lecturer, Communication in Health Professions Education Unit (COHPE)

Averil holds a PhD in Applied Linguistics from The University of Melbourne, a Master of Cross-cultural Communication from The University of Sydney, and is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA).  As Senior Lecturer in Health Professions Communication, she currently coordinates programs focusing on developing health professions communication skills for medical and social work students on placement. She also trains clinical educators in supervising culturally and linguistically diverse students on placement. Averil’s current research interests are the development of curricula materials for the teaching and learning of health professions communication, transcultural teaching practices, the integration of linguistic theories and principles in health professions communication education, interprofessional education for communication skills development, and ethical assessment and GenAI practices in higher education, with a particular focus on students with English as an Additional Language.  LinkedIn  |  Google Scholar  |  ResearchGate |  Academia

Dr Elizabeth J. Cook

Elizabeth has extensive experience in the higher education sector. She is currently a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the School of Education, Faculty of Creative Industries, Education, Social Justice at Queensland University of Technology, a Sessional Academic at Edith Cowan University and serves as co-Journal Manager for the open-access Journal of Teaching and Learning for Graduate Employability. Her career has spanned roles in teaching, research, strategy and educational design at various Australian universities, including The University of Melbourne, the University of Southern Queensland and James Cook University. She holds a PhD in Higher Education: Research, Evaluation & Enhancement from Lancaster University, and both a Master of Teaching (Secondary accelerated) by Research and Bachelor of Science from The University of Melbourne. Elizabeth is heavily involved with Work-Integrated Learning Australia – the national professional association for work-integrated learning (WIL) and collaborative education – as a National Board member, WA Chapter Director, Research & Impact Committee Co-Chair and Finance and Audit Committee member. Her methodological expertise and research interests are broad and span higher education research, including work-integrated learning (WIL), employability and career development learning, and digital infrastructures/learning; evaluation and evaluative practices; research impact and community engagement in research; and public health, nutrition and food environments.
