Event description

Learn the importance and techniques of grafting stone fruit trees.

Description: Each participant will leave with an introductory understanding of shield bud grafting trees including hands on experience grafting your own two cherry rootstocks to take home. We will have scion material of a few different plum and tart cherry varieties for you to use. You are also welcome to bring some of your own stone fruit scions as long as they are free of disease. For successful grafts you need to bring a bud stick of this years growth with dormant buds, ideally pencil thick. Cut them the morning before the workshop, and bring them in a plastic bag, labeled by the variety. We will have the rootstock and tools, but feel free to bring your own pruners, grafting tools you have, as well as clothes for changing weather. If we have time we will also explore the orchard for top-working some trees.

To begin the Smokebrush plant nursery, and tremendously expand our food forests and orchards for a fraction of the cost of buying trees.

Bio: Kelsey Pazera is an ISA certified arborist who has been working professionally amongst the trees for 7 years. She got her start at a tree nursery in New Mexico by learning different plant propagation techniques such as grafting along with other skills such as holistic orcharding methods and soil health. Kelsey is a lover of all thing’s trees, a bit of an apple nerd, and a life-long learner who is excited to share her passion with others.
