About the class:

In this six-week workshop, you’ll learn to draw (or paint) the human figure in an objectively accurate manner using a live model, including analyzing underlying structure and proportions of male and female human figures and drawing the human figure in an expressive manner, with desired mood or emotional nuance.

Students will start by going over the concept of working from a live model with handouts and instruction, followed by quick demos followed by free work time and feedback from the instructor.

Course overview:

Week 1: Proportion and “live model etiquette”
Week 2: Shapes: Simplify! Contour and Values
Week 3: Gesture (though a simple pose, still getting movement)
Week 4: Color: skin tone : lights and darks
Week 5 : Continuation of applying techniques learned weeks 1-4.
Week 6: Continuation of applying techniques learned weeks 1-4.


    Suggested Supplies:

    (These are just suggestions, will work with anyone’s preferred media)

    Draw:
    Drawing pad: no smaller than 16” x 20”
    Drawing utensils: Vine charcoal stick, graphite pencil (2B, 6B)

    Paint:
    Colors: at least these: yellow, blue, red, white
    (If oil, only gamesol allowed)

    About the Artist:

    Kelly Oakes has taught art for 20 years to all ages and abilities. She has a BFA from The Maryland Institute of Art, as well as studied at The Arts Students League in NYC. She enjoys sharing her passion for creating and appreciating art. She recently relocated with her husband to Hillsborough, NC. Kelly now has a studio at Eno Mill Artist Studios in Hillsborough, where she continues to paint commissions and teach.
