Harakeke Wānanga - Natural Wall Hangings

This event has passed Get tickets

Event description

Learn about harakeke (NZ flax), how to harvest and prepare it and how to use it for different purposes. This creative and fun, family-friendly activity will be held at Hakatere Marae.

Create a natural wall hanging using shredded harakeke (flax) - attach woven fish or flowers (you will be shown how to make them), shells, photos or other items to your harakeke.

Harakeke tutor Vicky King from South Canterbury will run this workshop and a morning one suitable for beginners (making putiputi/ flowers). The following day we have a full day workshop for beginners to learn to weave a pop-up kete.  You are welcome to attend one or all of the wānanga!

This workshop is the only one suitable for bringing children to. You can come along by yourself or bring your whānau to help you work on your wall hanging.  This event is happening during the free Easter Family Fun Day at the Marae - so there will be an Easter Egg hunt and other Easter crafts and games for the kids to enjoy as well.

Limit of 12 places so registrations are essential - a whānau or an individual = 1 place .

Put your name on the waiting list if it's fully booked. If you do register but then can no longer make it, please let us know so others can take your spot. Anyone of any culture & gender is welcome to give it a go.

Please bring a small piece of driftwood or similar and some shells or other things you'd like to attach to your wall hanging.

This Harakeke Wānanga is part of the Keep Learning Mid Canterbury 2023 programme and has been made possible thanks to funding from the Ashburton District Council Mayor's Fund
