Event description

After many months of planning and careful thought, our doors are open, Haven is proud to present: Sleep D, Cousin and Castla

Running two of Australia's most interesting labels; Sleep D (Butter Sessions) and Cousin (Moonshoe), consistently deliver excellent selections at events all over the world.

Haven positions itself as a high quality temporary venue where people can celebrate music and connect with their community before the building is inevitably redeveloped. The entire space is built entirely with salvaged materials; a nod to the space's transient nature. The impermanence of the space becomes part of its power, building urgency and turning each night of unique programming into a rarity.

The venues story is also shaped by the history of the building. An old Woolworths site now being transformed into a venue for culture.

The installation led by Oliver Buckworth, Katsu Yokoyama and Zelimir Harasty takes guests to a street scene in a densely populated city, where culture, sound and life overlap. There’s Traces of Kowloon city, 80’s anime, Wong Kar Wai films and Tokyo listening bar culture.

Our evening starts on the newly renovated terrace with Myles Doughman and the Dingo Balerico and moves into the main room after sunset. Tickets are limited and expected to move quickly. Info on the artists below.

We acknowledge the Arakwal people of the Bundjalung Nation, the Traditional Custodians of the land on which this event takes place. We recognise their enduring connection to Country, culture, and community, and we pay our deepest respects to Elders past and present. We also extend that respect to all First Nations people in attendance.

Sonic explorers, label heads, pillars of the Melbourne/Naarm underground, Sleep D explore the rave

unconscious - driving rhythms, hypnotic bass, worlds of echo and the hazy bliss of the morning after.

Childhood friends with Iraqi and Maltese lineage, the duo and their legacy building Butter Sessions label

have ushered in a new era, sensibility and productivity to the city that raised them. A defiantly DIY

two-man assembly line, Maryos Syawish and Corey Kikos have issued a steady stream of diverse records

on their own imprint, as well as on like-minded international outposts Incienso, Planet Euphorique and

Cocktail d'Amore. Releasing ‘Rebel Force’ in 2019 and ‘Electronic Arts’ in 2023, their albums bind a

singular take on mutated house, bush doof, dub techno and downtempo, while their composition and

production capacity has also been augmented via 2021’s chamber orchestra collaboration ‘Flashed Glass’

and the rescored film soundtracks for ‘Eraserhead’ and ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’. With long-standing DJ

residencies and an ever evolving live show fit for both clubs and vast paddocks, the dexterous duo’s

alchemy has energised hordes across the US, UK, Europe, Asia and Australia.

Diving from starlit heights to ocean depths, Cousin’s echoes step through tempos and styles

while summoning surreal sonic landscapes centered in spacious atmospherics, subterranean

bass pressure and rhythmic hypnotisms.

Hailing from Australia, Cousin channels the local flora, infusing his work with their variegated

vibrancy. Now found on constant rotation of both hemispheres, creating indelible memoried and

weaving magical dancefloor moments through clubs and festivals across North America, UK,

Europe and Asia.

Whether DJing a teeming warehouse party or conjuring up a mesmerizing live set, Cousin’s

versatility as an artist and fluency in navigating across different energy levels comes from a

place of unrestrained imagination and otherworldly inspiration.

Castla is the kind of musical chameleon you might find opening with idm, rnb and dub tracks or running full speed at peak time.

He has been featured on The Lot radio in NYC and Noh in Istanbul as well as contributing a mix for Steeplejack rec earlier this year. With an insatiable appetite for new sounds expect the process of discovery to be mutual and the selection to be intuitive and alive.
