Join us for Hearing First Nations Voices - a community listening event co-hosted by Queensland Community Alliance and Reconciliation Queensland.

First Nations people are so often treated as political footballs. We want to address that by building stronger and deeper relationships across the civil society organisations in our Alliance including unions, faith groups, community organisations and ethnic associations.

This starts with sharing stories and identifying common issues we can act on together.

What we will do in this event:

Share about the Qld Community Alliance and our shared agenda Maroonprint 2024: Our Community Driven Agenda for Queensland.

Listen to First Nations people about the stories and pressures that affect us, our families, and our communities.
Prioritise ways to present strong First Nations voices when we seek commitments from the Premier and Opposition Leader. We will have with 1000 community members meet with them publicly on 13th August at Maroonprint Election Assembly.
Build relationships for shared action on First Nations justice at the heart of our ongoing community organising agenda.

Background:

The Queensland Community Alliance has developed Maroonprint 2024: Our Community Driven Agenda for Queensland

This shared agenda has identified 6 areas we will act on together, coming from rolling listening campaigns across Queensland.

The six issues areas are:

First Nations Justice.
Safe and Connected Communities.
Accelerating Queensland's Renewable Energy transition.
Welcoming New Queenslanders.
Thrive by Five.
Secure Work.

Queensland Community Alliance

The Queensland Community Alliance brings together 32 member organisations representing 1.7 million Queenslanders. We organise our members and communities to act for the common good. We are churches, mosques, other faith groups, trade unions, community organisations and ethnic associations.

Community organising is democracy in action: winning victories that change lives, transform communities, develop leadership and strengthen civil society.

This Alliance is based around the personal relationships we build across organisations in our local area. We identify and train people to become leaders in community organising, and decide our priorities for action together, through a process of listening to stories of pressures that our members face and witness.

The core elements of our Alliance are:

Non-partisan. Holding politicians of all parties to their responsibility to serve the community.
Adhering to the rule never to do for other what they can do for themselves.
We will work in partnership to together solve the problems we face.
A commitment to listening to the voice of the excluded and partnership with the most vulnerable in our community.
Self-funding— funded out of the dues of member organisations (contributing according to their size and capacity), and not accepting government funding.
Working only on issues that make our Alliance stronger. We do not work on issues which bring core values of our members into tension. Instead, we seek to address the tension that exists between our shared values, and what we witness in the world.

Our Alliance draws on the community organising tradition of the United States. Our sister organisations are the Sydney Alliance, Hunter Community Alliance, Te Ohu Whakawhanaunga (New Zealand) and Citizens UK.
