[PORT PIRIE WORKSHOP]: Holding Space For Suicide Distress
Event description
About the workshop:
Explore a non-clinical approach to sitting with people experiencing suicide distress, informed by lived experience and facilitated by peers.
Who this workshop is for:
This workshop is an introductory session to an alternative approach for community members, peer workers, family and friends - anyone in the community who wants to learn skills around more effectively supporting other people in distress who may be struggling with suicidal thoughts.
Themes covered:
This workshop is non-clinical and avoids harmful risk assessment and referral strategies that are heavily leaned on in other approaches.
The focus will be around how to hold space, reframing common views on suicidality and addressing harmful myths and misconceptions.
Structure of the workshop and facilitator:
This three-hour workshop is available free to people with an interest in this important topic. The session will be facilitated by Dr Amy Wright, Peer Project Worker and Emrys Temple-Heald, Peer Training Coordinator, and includes an additional 15 minutes question and answer time at the close of the workshop.
