How to write up your qualitative data analysis
Event description
“How to write up your qualitative data analysis”
This session is part of the series: Qualitative Data Analysis at UTS. The aim of this series is to showcase and celebrate the diverse and innovative ways UTS researchers are working with qualitative data, unpack some underlying principles of qualitative data analysis, and explore some qualitative data theoretical frameworks.
Writing up qualitative analysis is tricky. We need to balance quotations from raw data with researcher commentary and insights. No quotitis! We also need to differentiate between specific claims about what we studied, and the wider conclusions we draw. We need to ride the ‘semantic wave’ between concrete particulars and more abstract generalities. Plus we need rich meta-text (signposts, cues, pre-emptive counter-strikes against doubts in the reader’s mind). In this workshop Professor Nick Hopwood will explain these crucial elements and help you learn how to incorporate them in your writing, so readers are interested in and persuaded by what you have to say!
Learning outcomes:
- Learn how to spot effective qualitative writing techniques and understand why they work
- Learn how to make effective use of qualitative data in your writing
- Learn how to distinguish and defend various kinds of claims, and conclusions
Other workshops in the series Qualitative Data Analysis at UTS:
