Humans for Good May Potluck šŸ„˜

Price $10 AUD + BF Get tickets

Event description

Join ourĀ community for a night of good food, good stories, and good humans.Ā

Humans For Good potlucks are hereĀ to provide a casual, inclusive and cosyĀ space to explore different global issues and how we can all be working together to do a little more good for people and the planet.

At each event, we like to host conversations around a couple ofĀ big topics.Ā In May, we'll be discussingĀ not for profits vs social enterprises (which is better for social impact and getting paid?), and how we can use artificial intelligence for good.

Anyone with an interest in social impact is very welcome to join us, and we'reĀ also stoked to now have a virtual option for thoseĀ outside of Sydney who would like to listen into the talks remotely (grab a virtual ticket below).Ā Ā

So, w
hyĀ potlucks?Ā

Humans For Good potlucksĀ are an opportunity to connect with likeminded humans in the way we have for thousands of years: over a home-cooked meal.Ā

Rather than a networking event, each potluck isĀ an experience that is co-created by the community, for the community. Whether you bring a meal, share your story, or help us keep things running smoothly,Ā everyone contributes something toward making the night memorable and impactful.Ā

The night beginsĀ with chats over dinner, and ends with a time forĀ storytelling by guest speakers fromĀ Humans For Good.Ā

A few more details ā€“Ā

šŸ“Ā  The potlucks take place atĀ a NY style loftĀ atĀ 19-23 Wellington Street, Chippendale, Sydney (any issues with finding the location, call Tharun on 0439 705 284)
šŸ„˜Ā  Please bring aĀ dish to share if you can!Ā (and make sure to label for any allergies and intolerancesĀ plz šŸ™). As this is a community event where people bring dishes of different kinds, please ensure that you are assessing what you can and cannot eat šŸ™‚
šŸŽŸļøĀ Ā Tickets are a $10 donation to the community, to help us cover renting the space and some drinks at the event!Ā
šŸ’°Ā  This time, our potluckĀ will be supportingĀ La Cocina de Kima ā€“ a soup kitchen in Medellin, Colombia, which serves meals to vulnerable children in the Llanadas neighbourhood.Ā This a completely grassroots, community-led initiative and 100% of your donation will go directly toward the soup kitchen. It is roughly 50c per meal, so if you donate $5 for example, that'll feed 10 children and enable Kima to grow her vision for her neighbourhood ā€“ including serving vulnerable children and adults not only twice a week, but every day.

Who will be sharing their story?Ā Ā

After dinner, we'll be having fireside chats between aĀ few good humans and social impact leaders in our community:

Weh YeohĀ (our guest storyteller)

Weh is going to share his views aroundĀ living a life of purpose (and getting paid to do so), doing good and challenging the status quo, and whether not for profits or social enterprises are better for having impact.Ā HeĀ has worked internationally and in Australia, his home country, in the social impact space for nearly two decades.Ā He is the founder of OIC Cambodia, an initiative that aims to establish speech therapy as a profession in Cambodia. WehĀ has volunteered with people with disabilities in Vietnam, interned in India, studied Mandarin in Beijing, and milked yaks in Mongolia. He started OIC in 2013, and handed over leadership to a local Cambodian team in 2017. He has since co-founded Umbo, a social enterprise bridging the gap for rural Australians to access allied health services.Ā In 2023 he published his first book, Redundant Charities: Escaping the Cycle of Dependence, it discusses the structural issues that face charities, and promotes a new model of charity - one that makes itself redundant.

Lee SchofieldĀ (our guest storyteller)

Lee is going to talk to the ethics behind designing AI tools, and how we can be leveraging it to do more good in the world. SheĀ isĀ passionate about helping businesses innovate and transform through strategy, design thinking, and the integration of emerging technologies like AI. Over the past 15 years, she hasĀ cultivated a diverse career driven by curiosity, creativity, and continuous learning.

Polly CameronĀ (our MC)

Polly Cameron is a social entrepreneur and passionate advocate for democratic reform. As the Director of Change Politics, she's building a movement to transform political systems. Polly has been a Program Manager at newDemocracy Foundation, led the Australian branch of The School of Life, and influenced social enterprise and innovation for over a decade. From facilitating transformative courses, to nurturing future change leaders, to managing an arts festival in Italy ā€“ she loves creativity, purpose and people and is certified mediator and facilitator.
