A recent Four Corners program focused on the future of the Australian mining industry in the context the important role rare earths will play in supporting our renewable future. In the story, Allison Britt, Director, Mineral Recourses, Geoscience Australia was quoted saying “critical minerals are absolutely essential to support the transition to renewable energy. It's absolutely ironic, but to save the planet, we are going to need more mines”. Australia is front and center for playing a major role in supplying these minerals to the world but there are headwinds in how we as a nation approach this task.
What is the scope of these challenges and what do we need to do to overcome them?
