Immersia 2024: A Glimpse of India - Garba Dance Workshop by ACT Desi

Event description

ACT Desi, a community organisation in Canberra, brings to you A Glimpse of India – a vibrant showcase of rich multicultural diversity of India.

This year we are bringing a traditional folk-dance workshop as part of Immersia 2024, hosted by the ANU School of Culture, History & Language and in collaboration with the ANU Student Research Conference.

Known as GARBA, the dance form originated in the western part of India, in Gujarat, and is celebrated during Navaratri, a festival that lasts nine nights. Garba is not just popular in India but all over the world. Much of its adaptation can be seen in some popular Bollywood movies.

Pick up a few steps and have some fun dancing your calories away with Rucha, a trained dancer and choreographer in Canberra.

Did you know?

In December 2023, UNESCO recognised Garba with the Intangible cultural heritage tag.

Come, let’s garba!
