Impostor Phenomenon Unpacked: A Masterclass for Coaches and People Leaders in Medicine
Event description
Many high-achieving professionals in medical and allied fields quietly struggle with feelings of intellectual fraudulence. Far more complex than self-doubt, the impostor phenomenon (also misnamed as 'imposter syndrome') is shaped by social, workplace, and personal factors and can be associated with long-term stress, burnout, anxiety, and stalled careers. Research suggests that the experience is widespread in medical contexts.
This evidence-informed, interactive course is designed for coaches, supervisors, and managers who want to better support individuals dealing with impostor experiences. You’ll gain a deep understanding of how these feelings develop, how to distinguish them from typical self-doubt, and how to challenge the myths perpetuated by social media. The impact on others in the workplace and the influence of workplace systems and cultures is also explored.
Designed to augment your current coaching and leadership practices, you'll bring your own insights to the discussion to develop strategies that fit with your approaches.
Grounded in over 40 years of research, the program enhances—not replaces—your existing coaching or leadership approach. You'll learn how to recognise impostor feelings and consequences and use your coaching or leadership capabilities to diminish the sense of intellectual fraudulence in others.
Significant time and effort have gone into developing this program. Grounded in over 40 years of empirical research, this course combines a strong academic foundation with a practical focus for those supporting others in medical professions.
Together, we'll explore ...
- the realities of the impostor phenomenon, debunking myths and misinformation prevalent on social and popular media.
- why seemingly capable, successful, and confident individuals in the medical field struggle to acknowledge their past achievements or future potential.
- the personal origins of the experience and the complexities involved in addressing it.
- why it is often a long-term, cyclical, sometimes career-spanning issue that can be debilitating for individuals and impactful for those around them.
- strategies to help individuals reduce the internal narratives that perpetuate their fear of failure and discomfort with success.
- Additionally, we will discuss how to recognise these experiences in others and leverage your practice to support those experiencing feelings of intellectual fraudulence.
Real impact begins with genuine understanding. Equip yourself with the knowledge and confidence to assist others in identifying and overcoming impostor experiences, fostering their ability to thrive.
