More about the topic

Corrosion is a global problem affecting industry.  It can lead to structural failure, loss of containment, environmental damage, risk to personnel, and loss of public confidence.

The global cost of corrosion is estimated to be US$2.5 trillion, which is equivalent to 3.4% of the global GDP.  These costs typically do not consider production downtime, safety, and environmental impacts from loss of containment and greenhouse gas emissions from the production of steel necessary for the substitution of rusted metal and damaged coatings.

Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) is corrosion caused by microorganisms.  It represents one of costliest, most pervasive, and unpredictable forms of corrosion in industry, contributing to 20% of the total cost of corrosion and 40% of all internal pipeline corrosion.  MIC is a significant issue in various industries, including oil and gas, water treatment, and maritime sectors.

Understanding MIC is crucial because it can lead to severe structural damage, safety hazards, and substantial financial losses. Addressing MIC effectively can enhance the longevity and reliability of infrastructure and equipment.

Key points that will be covered in this technical event

  • Introduction to MIC
    • Overview of MIC.
    • Materials susceptible to MIC.
  • MIC Management
    • MIC assessment & contributing factors.
    • Mitigation and best practices for preventing and managing MIC.
    • Monitoring strategies to prevent MIC progression.
    • Monitoring methods, sampling, and preservation including hands-on demonstrations.
  • Case Studies and Real-World Applications:
    • Lessons learned from industry experiences and MIC failures.
    • MIC Examples of successful MIC management.

Expected Take-Aways:

    • Attendees will gain a thorough understanding of what MIC is, why it is important and how it impacts different industries.
    • Awareness of common mistakes, poor practice, and common reasons for MIC failure.
    • Practical knowledge of MIC management, from prevention to effective control, housekeeping and monitoring.
