This event is presented alongside the exhibition Fugue and Palimpsest: A Malaysian Culture of Diaspora by Ming Sun and Ava Sih.
Fugue and Palimpsest: A Malaysian Culture of Diaspora brings together two emerging artists, Ming Sun and Ava Sih, whose work reflects their deep connections to Malaysian Chinese cultural heritage. Both artists explore themes of identity, memory and the fusion of traditional and contemporary practices through a range of media.
Fugue means a loss of awareness of one's identity often due to a flight from one's usual environment, and Palimpsest is something reused or altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form. This title speaks to the Chinese culture that immigrated to Malaysia, developed, reformed and spread across the world through the Nanyang diaspora communities. This illustrates the dilemmas and struggles of a culture far from its origin yet partially native to its new homeland.
Exhibition dates: Friday 10 January – Saturday 8 February 2025
