Fifteen Years of Equality? Disability in Australia after the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
Event description
It has been fifteen years since Australia ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. In the wake of the Final Report of the Disability Royal Commission and the new National Disability Strategy, we ask: what progress has been achieved?
In this hybrid event to mark the 2023 International Day of People with Disabilities, we bring together a panel of leading experts to confront this challenging question.
Our speakers include:
- Dr Alastair McEwin, former Commissioner on the Disability Royal Commission and former Disability Discrimination Commissioner.Â
- June Riemer, Deputy CEO of First People’s Disability Network, 2021 NSW Aboriginal Woman of the Year
- Rosemary Kayess, human rights lawyer, major contributor to the Convention and chair of the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities
- Fiona Mckenzie, activist, former chair of the Board of the Council for Intellectual Disability and current Vice Chairperson of CID.Â
- Professor Julian Trollor, Professor of Intellectual Disability Mental Health at UNSW
The event will be introduced by Professor Jackie Leach Scully, Director of the Disability Innovation Institute, and hosted by Nas Campanella, Disability Affairs reporter for ABC News. The panel will be followed by refreshments.
We encourage you to register today to secure your place as in-person spots are limited. * Please note the change in location.Â
