Description

Introduction to Cyanotype (Sun Printing)

Learn the simple, eco-friendly cyanotype process from a professional artist and educator! Cyanotypes are a historic photographic technique that produces stunning, rich blue prints — perfect for capturing the delicate beauty of nature. We'll start by finding and collecting suitable subject matter to work with (think plants, dried flowers, bits of cloth and anything you might find in your junk drawer!), then arrange them into original compositions. Eric will guide each participant through the exposure and processing steps, ensuring beautiful results. Every participant takes home their prints as one-of-a-kind artworks and will also have a folder, instructions and picture frame for displaying their work and continuing to explore the process. Suitable for ages 10+.

Reviews from previous workshop participants:

"Excellent intro to this easy, interesting manner of thoughtful interaction with nature and light. Eric is a great teacher, describing the variables which affect the results, at the same time as providing a relaxed atmosphere for this time-sensitive craft. We’ll surely work this art form into our nature-based activities." - Norris

"We had the most amazing experience learning about an art form that you don’t get to see very often. It was so fun and hands on. Thank you Eric for a wonderful experience and sharing all your knowledge with us. I can’t wait to use the knowledge for my own art. Don’t miss out on this experience, you’ll have forever memories." - Carla

"If you’re on the fence about whether to take one of Eric’s workshops…climb over, you won’t regret it. First of all, Eric is a genuinely lovely person, but he is also very knowledgeable about Cyanotype art and provides a really fun experience. We loved every minute and would love to come back and take another workshop!" - Catherine

FAQs

  • Do I have to bring anything?

All materials will be provided for making the cyanotypes, but it doesn't hurt to bring some objects that you want to transform into photograms. While cyanotype is an eco-friendly process, it can also stain clothes, so feel free to bring a smock or wear your "studio" clothes.

  • What will we make?

One-of-a-kind artwork! While the content of your art is completely up to you, you should be able to make around four to five 12" x 9" prints over the course of the workshop. You'll be able to transport these safely home with a provided folder, instructions and a picture frame.

  • Who will be leading the workshop?

Eric is a teaching artist and creator of Canie Creek Community College and Blue Ridge Blueprints.

Eric William Carroll’s work on photography, science, and nature explores the differences in how we experience, organize, and represent the world. Through his photographs, installations, and performances, Carroll creates visual and emotional connections that expand our understanding of space and time. As a public scholar Carroll activates archives and collaborates playfully with artists and non-artists alike. At the heart of his practice is a genuine sense of curiosity and humor that celebrates ephemerality and obsolescence.

Carroll’s work has been shown widely and has been included in exhibitions at the New Orleans Museum of Art, Aperture Foundation, the Museum of Contemporary Photography, Pier 24 Photography, among others. Carroll has participated in residencies at MacDowell, Rayko Photo Center and the Blacklock Nature Sanctuary, and was the winner of the 2012 Baum Award for Emerging Photographers. Born and raised in the Midwest, Carroll is currently based in Asheville, North Carolina.
