IP Seminar Series – Seminar 2: Trade Marks and Brand Protection

HunterNet members are primarily Hunter-based manufacturers, many of whose businesses are underpinned by key intellectual property (IP). It is critical that businesses take stock of their assets, consider what intellectual property rights they own and how to best protect those rights. This series aims to familiarise the audience with typical IP rights in manufacturing businesses, acquaint them with the protections available and how to secure those protections, and explain the potential consequences of a failure to adequately protect their IP.

Richard Suters – Principal, SWS Lawyers

Richard is a commercial lawyer with more than 25 years’ experience in both private practice and in-house roles. He is a contract and commercial law specialist. Richard advises clients on a range of corporate and commercial legal matters. He has experience in drafting, negotiating and advising on commercial arrangements for the supply of goods and services, coal supply, construction, equipment hire, agency and distribution, licensing and joint venture arrangements. Richard also has extensive experience in privacy law and consumer law matters. He is known for his ability to provide clear, commercially focused legal advice. Richard spent six years in London working with Japanese trading house Marubeni. More recently, he worked in a substantial in-house counsel role for a Hunter-based mining services business. Prior to this appointment he spent seven years working in the corporate group of a national law firm. The combination of Richard’s in-house and private practice experience, together with his practical and commercial outlook, underpins his reputation as a trusted adviser to his loyal client base.

Ange McDonald – Barrister, 5 Wentworth Chambers

Angela practises in all aspects of Intellectual Property including patents, trade marks, copyright, designs and consumer protection. Angela has been featured in Doyle’s Intellectual Property list since 2021. Angela regularly appears in the Federal Court of Australia, including the Full Court, various state Supreme Courts, the Patent Office and the Trade Mark Office. Prior to coming to bar, Angela was a solicitor in two specialist IP firms. Angela was also the Associate to Justice Nicholas of the Federal Court of Australia where she gained extensive experience in intellectual property disputes and large commercial matters. Angela graduated with first class honours in law from the University of New South Wales. Angela is also on the Editorial Panel for the Australian Intellectual Property Law Bulletin, is a co-author of the LexisNexis Australia Copyright & Designs chapter on International Copyright and has also authored a number of publications in intellectual property law.
