JMI Jazz Orchestra performs the Kansas City Suite
Event description
The JMI Jazz Orchestra will be ending semester 1 with a bang with this special Monday night concert open to the public!
Quite a few names come to mind when reflecting on the great bands of the swing era, but no list could be complete without Count Basie. Basie was a pianist and bandleader whose style was forged and elevated by the burgeoning Kansas City music scene of the 1920s and 30s, developing foundations of the sound of the time alongside other great swing era musicians such as Benny Moten, Lester Young Coleman Hawkins, Mary Lou Williams.
In 1960 Basie's Orchestra went into the studio to record a series of pieces composed by Benny Carter named the Kansas City Suite. Each piece is affectionately named for a different place or person Carter associated with Kansas City, as he nostalgically reflects on a bustling crossroads of a bygone era and sounds of its musicians.
The JMI Jazz Orchestra is proud to continue our series of concerts performing complete albums of significance. In 2024 JMIJO presented the entire legendary Atomic Basie from cover to cover and this concert will be a continuation of our in-depth study of the playing style of Basie's band. Basie swings and we love Basie!
The JMI Jazz Orchestra is an 18-piece big band made of up of students and staff from the Jazz Music Institute led by Josh Hatcher. The JMI Jazz Orchestra performs regularly around South East Queensland at a variety of venues and festivals.
