Joel Negus: Mourn
Event description
ABOUT THE NIGHT
Join Joel Negus for the live recording of his new 5-movement piece, Mourn. Mourn is a chamber piece that explores the convergence of electric and acoustic sounds while guiding the listener through the mourning experience. There will be violin, viola, bassoon, piano, voice, effects and synthesizers.
The spirit of the piece is to help create space for people to experience the universality of pain and mourning. To Negus, it has always been central to this project to include people in the live performance - everyone adding to the experience in the room. Sharing space together is what sparks the beauty of human existence.
Due to the nature of the recording, there are a few items to take note of.
- It is critical to be quiet during the recording.
- Doors will open at 7:00pm and close at 7:30pm. Between movements and recording, we will briefly open the door to admit late-comers. Please do not open the door if it is closed.
- This isn't a strict "No kids allowed" session, but please keep in mind their ability to sit quietly for minutes at a time.
- In addition to the audio recording, there will also be video taken throughout the night.
- It is possible that you'll hear certain movements/sections multiple times for the recording.
- We will ask that you turn off your phones for the duration of the recording (fully off, not just vibrate). Due to the intimate nature of the recording and very sensitive microphones, it will be critical to keep extra sound to a minimum.
From 7:00 to 7:30pm and post-recording there will be complimentary light fare food and beverages.

ABOUT JOEL NEGUS
Joel Negus is a composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist proudly living in Cleveland, OH. With a background in many genres, including jazz, indie/folk, and metal, Joel pursued a degree in Double Bass performance, completing his undergraduate studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music in 2011. Between 2011-2015, Joel founded and operated the Cleveland Music Collaborative, employing classical and jazz musicians in Northeast Ohio to teach and perform, as well as invest in their creative projects. Joel began to focus on composition, viewing the home studio as his instrument. This shift combined his passion for sound and recording with his technical ability as a performer. Having worked on a number of licensing projects for television and film, most of Joel's compositional work is focused on the intersection of acoustic and electronically-produced sounds. In 2023, Joel started Cleveland Scoring, a company focused on building session work, particularly recording music for media including film, tv, and video games. Joel also serves as a pastor at City Church in Coventry Village.
