Event description
‘Supreme Love’
A Project created by Spike Mason, and premiered at Clarence Jazz Festival 2025.
A tribute to ‘A Love Supreme’ by John Coltrane on the 60th year Anniversary of the classic jazz albums' release.
A Love Supreme was released in 1965 and is recognised as John Coltrane's spiritual jazz masterpiece. The 4-part suite is a collection of deep chant-like grooves that underpin majestic solos drawn from melodic exhortations. The album, recorded by the John Coltrane Quartet, audibly changed the sonic landscape of modern music. It became an undeniable influence on musicians from the worlds of jazz, pop, and classical music, and continues to be so.
This tribute comprises of a 7 piece ensemble - of new arrangements and imaginings of the original 4 Coltrane pieces, with an additional 4 original pieces composed by Spike Mason, Stevie McEntee, Louise Denson, and Sasha Gavlek.
The new work will echo the spirit of the original recording, but within the context of a modern Tasmanian demographic. Featuring male, female, and gender diverse artists in ages ranging from their 20s to their 60s.
