Larapuna Community Weekend 2026 - 21-23 August
Description
Friends of larapuna Coast are a Wildcare group that survey and remove the invasive beach weed Sea Spurge and marine debris as we make our way along the beautiful east coast among great company. Beach-nesting birds such as the Hooded Plover call this place home, and it's all about improving their habitat whilst taking in the incredible beauty of where they live. Every year we host a community weekend where volunteers come from near and far. You can sign up for one day or the whole weekend - details below!
FRIDAY 21 AUGUST - DEEP CREEK
The first day of the three-day Friends of larapuna Coast's community weekend for 2026 begins at the little shack community and PWS campground of Deep Creek (Map-click here).
After the 9 am (sharp) rendezvous and briefing, a free bus will transfer us to Stumpys Bay so we can walk the 13 km back to our starting point at Deep Creek at approximately 4.30 pm.
SATURDAY 22 AUGUST - EDDYSTONE PT 6 km
The second day of the three-day Friends of larapuna Coast's community weekend for 2026 begins at the old Ansons Bay shop (Map-click here) at 9 am (sharp) for a briefing. You can make your own way there or take the free bus from near St Helens skate park (Marina Parade) at 8.15 am (sharp).
Following the briefing, the group will separate into two different walks. This ticket is for the shorter 6 km walk from Deep Creek to Eddystone Point. A free bus will transfer us to Deep Creek to make our way south towards the lighthouse, where we will rendezvous with the other group that will have completed a longer walk northwards.
The day continues into the evening, with afternoon tea, some 'snappy talks' and an early BBQ dinner. Around 6 pm the bus will take everyone back to Ansons Bay, with the option to stay on the bus back to St Helens, arriving around 8 pm.
SATURDAY 22 AUGUST - EDDYSTONE PT 9 km
This ticket is for the longer 9 km walk north to Eddystone Point. After the briefing at the old Ansons Bay shop (see details above), we will car pool to our starting point to make our way north towards the lighthouse, where we will rendezvous with the other group that will have completed a shorter walk southwards. Here we will join the activities outlined above.
SUNDAY 23 AUGUST - ABBOTSBURY BEACH
On the third day, we meet at Ansons Bay at 9 am (sharp). Meet us at the old Ansons Bay shop (82 North Ansons Rd) after making your own way there. Briefing commences at the old Ansons Bay shop at 9.15 am, before enjoying a 7 km walk on Abbotsbury Beach until roughly 3 pm.
Unfortunately we have had to renege on the offer of a free optional bus from St Helens skate park - but if you are stuck let us know and we'll try help arrange a lift.
To participate you must already be registered with the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service as a volunteer and be registered for each day.
You cannot register on the day. This is done online by applying here: PWS Volunteer Registration link. Being a registered volunteer worker brings protections, but also obligations. If you are already a registered PWS volunteer please check it is all up to date.
Please note:
A Parks Pass is required to enter Mount William National Park.
Distances are approximate. Young people under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Mobile phone reception is limited in this part of Tasmania so don't rely on having reception.
Please be aware that the walks are on a combination of soft sand, rocky headlands, uneven inland tracks and may include wading through cold water. A sound level of fitness is essential.
It is not unusual to experience four seasons in one day and we will be in a remote area with limited shelter - please be prepared with clothing for rain, wind and sunshine, sturdy footwear and food and water.
