Latin American Song workshop with Francisco Aguirre
Event description
Mariachi bandleader Francisco Aguirre leads the next Portland Folksong Society global folksong workshop at EJC! The workshop will be all about the music. As in PFS’ other global folksong workshops, participants will learn a few songs, in the original language, and sing them together with guidance from the leader.
“It will be a honor for me to teach mariachi or any other Latin American song,” Aguirre said, smiling broadly despite his cloudy future.
All Ages $10 advance/$12 door, with a discount for PFS members.
A native of El Salvador, Aguirre is a singer, guitarist and songwriter who plays a variety of Latin American styles. He leads Mariachi Chapala, a group that has been together since 2008 and is considered the Pacific Northwest’s premier practitioners of that Mexican musical style. And recent events have inspired him to write songs about the situation of immigrants in the United States.
Since 1976, Portland FolkMusic Society has been active preserving, presenting and promoting folk music and arts in the greater Portland Oregon area. PFS sponsors song circles, concerts, workshops and retreats – in person and virtual – and helps its members and the whole community pass the word around about folk music events, from old time ballads to sea shanties, from 60’s protest folk to contemporary singer-songwriters.
PFS is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization.
