Take a journey through the historical moments of the area now known as Joshua Tree National Park. This class focuses on the park’s history, beginning with the homesteaders of the mid-1800s and continuing through to its recent history. Take a journey through the historical moments of the area now known as Joshua Tree National Park.

  • This class is held in Joshua Tree National Park.

  • This class is suitable for intermediate to experienced outdoor enthusiasts. No history expertise is required.

  • Entry to Joshua Tree National Park is included in the cost of enrollment.

  • No meals or equipment are provided.

  • Participants are responsible for their own transportation. Carpooling is encouraged. 

  • The class will meet at the Joshua Tree Visitor Center in Joshua Tree and caravan to Barker Dam. Participants will walk around Barker Dam (1 mile), Wall Street Mill (2 miles), and then caravan to Sheep Pass group site to have lunch. This class will end at Sheep Pass.

Activity level: This class is moderate. It requires 3 or more miles of walking, which may include several hours outdoors in the elements, significant elevation gain, and variable terrain. You will need personal equipment.

Required items for participants: 

  • Daypack

  • Water

  • Salty Snacks and a sack lunch

  • Hat

  • Sunscreen

  • Appropriate clothing attire and closed-toe shoes

  • Hiking poles if needed

Any other pertinent information: This class will caravan from the meeting location into Joshua Tree National Park. Park pass is included.

Your instructors: Pam Kersey teaches field classes for the Desert Institute and serves as a lead volunteer and archaeological site steward. She has also volunteered as a camp nurse. Pam has completed four marathon hikes to raise funds for children’s cancer and has summited Mount Whitney twice. She enjoys teaching hiking and backpacking, helping others safely connect with the outdoors. Recently retired, Pam’s career included nursing, nursing education, and serving as a college dean overseeing science and math disciplines such as chemistry, biology, engineering, physics, and astronomy.

Tom Scanlan is a retired telecommunications professional and college educator who spends his time camping, hiking, and volunteering. An avid outdoorsman and former Boy Scout Leader with ten years of experience, Tom has climbed Mount Whitney twice. He has taught backpacking, camping, and hiking skills to people of all ages. Tom is an active archaeological site steward for Joshua Tree National Park, Cleveland National Forest, and Desert Institute.
