The Gwalia Museum is a big surprise to most visitors as it is a world class museum based in old mine buildings such as the mine office, mine manager's house, assay building, winder & headframe sitting on top of a rugged hill above the deepest underground mine for trucks in the whole wide world, mining gold, with a great look-out over the mine workings.

 Mary Meier was eighteen years old & seven & a half months pregnant when she arrived in Gwalia in 1955 with her husband who had been promised a job with a house. The couple thought the opportunity would set them up to save money for their new family.  Imagine their dismay when they arrived to find a simple shack with a few items of broken unusable furniture …
