Leonora-Gwalia Unearthed - Leonora Cemetery Tours
Event description
Leonora Gwalia Unearthed - part of the National Trust Heritage Festival 2025 in WA
Come & hear some of the stories unearthed from this unique region of the Northern Goldfields. Families brought together across the miles from Europe to the Goldfields. Some then split apart by mining accidents, perishing, war & death.
Mildred Mary Walshaw was born at Yellowdine while her intrepid mother was on a camel trip from the railhead at Southern Cross to join her husband, Daniel Baker, who was mining at Comet Vale, south of Menzies! With a start in life like that it is no wonder she went on to live such a fascinating life herself. Mildred completed a mining course at the School of Mines in Kalgoorlie in the 1950s. After first her parents & then her husband died, she stayed on at Comet Vale for decades, mining alone. She now lies in an unmarked grave in the Leonora Cemetery.
Hear Mildred’s amazing story at her graveside.
