    Event description

"Let's Talk Finance"  one-day workshop for Directors

Build your Foundations of Financial Literacy

    Does this sound like you?

Your plan for 2024 includes doing the Company Directors course with the Australian Institute of Company Directors?

    • Or, as a non-finance person, are your concerns around the financial aspects of the Course causing a bit of angst or even holding you back from signing up?
    • Or, you've previously completed the Course, battled through the financials and still feeling pretty unsure of yourself when it comes to financial statements?

You're not alone. As a facilitator of the Financial Literacy & Performance module of the Company Directors Course for the Australian Institute of Company Directors, I typically find that more than 50% of participants assess their level of financial literacy as low or very low, and come into the room on day 4 feeling very unsure of themselves and somewhat anxious about finances.

Let's build the foundations of financial literacy

You may be feeling out of your depth when it comes to interpreting financial statements, and feel that where you need to start is at the beginning with the basics. And you wouldn't be the only one. Deciphering the jargon that accountants use, understanding the fundamentals of accounts through the balance sheet and profit & loss account is a good place to start.  Let me help you on your financial literacy journey, and get you up to speed so that you can feel confident in being part of the financial conversation at the Board table.

    This workshop is ideal for:

      • Directors or aspiring directors from a non-financial background who think of themselves as "not a numbers person";
      • who feel a bit vulnerable because they don’t know what all the accounting terms mean, and/or
      • don’t feel confident that they know the questions to ask when it comes to the numbers, and therefore
      • find themselves not participating in the conversation about the accounts.

      What does it cover?

This workshop is still at a foundational level and ideal if you're a visual and experiential learner. We do a fun activity to reinforce your learning,  enhancing your ability to interpret the story the accounts are telling you.

      • demystify accounting jargon- defining some key terms such as assets, liabilities, equity, revenue and expenses
      • what is a balance sheet, why do we need it and how does it balance
      • what sits on the balance sheet compared to the profit & loss account
      • distinguish between cash accounting and accruals accounting
      • get to grips with typical accounting transactions such as depreciation, accruals and prepayments
      • a hands on accounting activity to reinforce concepts, culminating in creation of a set of accounts and practice at interpreting the story of these accounts

After attending this workshop you will:

        • Cement your understanding of accounting terminology.
        • Be much more comfortable navigating your way around the balance sheet, profit & loss and cash flow statements.
        • Feel confident to be part of the discussion at the Board table about the financials.
        • Feel more confident to ask questions.
        • If you are yet to do the Company Directors Course, you will find the Financial Literacy and Performance material much easier to digest, and be looking forward to the financial literacy day to test your knowledge with the case studies!

"Thanks to Debbie for enhancing my financial literacy. I found the course highly engaging and thoroughly enjoyed the visual and hands on approach to learning. The learning environment was safe and friendly so I could ask questions and truly test my understanding. I walked away feeling more comfortable with numbers and even had some fun along the way!"
