Le Temps des Lettres (Letter Time)
Event description
Dear lovely human who has stumbled across this page,
Please join us for Le Temps des Lettres, or 'Letter Time', in the cosy upstairs space at Mokum Cafe, Brunswick.
A few years ago, a friend said, "I think I've forgotten how to write." She's not a writer, and the last time she could remember writing anything more than an answer on a form was in school. Life simply doesn't require us to write by hand anymore. In the age of emails, texts, and comments, it's easy for our thoughts and communications to become as brief as these. Hey, are you free next week? Check out this reel. Here's the place I was telling you about. Let me know what you think.
I used to write real letters to my friends, as close as the next street and as far as the Himalayan mountains. I sat down and poured my thoughts onto those pages, carefully folding the paper and sliding them into an envelope, sealing and stamping them, and putting them in the post. On the other side, my friends received something I'd written just for them. It wasn't just about the words. It was about the time. It was about the care. It was about the fact that I'd dedicated a space in my day, cleared a space in my mind and heart, just for them. True and undistracted.
I want to create space for this again.
This event's name is in French because I love the play on words. A time for letters (le temps des lettres) is also a time to be (le temps d'être). In this moment. With ourselves. With each other.
And so,
I invite you to join me for an evening of letter writing. Here's how it will work:
💌6.30 - 7pm: Doors open. Participants are invited to write on a piece of paper who you are this evening (not your real name). For example: 'Someone who didn't sleep well last night.' 'Someone looking for a new job.' 'Someone who misses my best friend.' 'Someone who is excited to be here.'
💌7 - 7.15pm: Welcome and introduction to the art of letter writing.
💌7.15 - 8pm: Writing Time.
💌8 - 9pm: Complete and package letters (signed Anon). Collect your letter - please don't open it yet! Mingle, relax, reflect, and stay as long as you like (just not past 9pm when we have to leave the room :)). On your way home, you'll have a letter to look forward to opening!
P.S.
You do not need to be a writer to attend this event. You do not need any writing experience at all (if you, like my friend, feel like you've 'forgotten how to write' - perhaps this event is especially for you!). You can come alone, or with friends. You only need to think of one thing, just as you arrive:
Who are you this evening?
What version of you would love to receive a letter?
That's all!
I hope to see you there,
Amy
